Talented storyteller, writer and speaker Ian Mackenzie reached out to me for a vision for the titles of this wonderfully insightful and profound documentary. 

For years, Stephen Jenkinson led the palliative care department at a major Canadian hospital. Sitting at the deathbeds of over 1000 people, he discovered again and again “a wretched anxiety” around death. He recognized this death phobia it is not a personal issue, but a symptom of a larger cultural absence, including the loss of elders. Soon after Stephen and his wife Nathalie opened the Orphan Wisdom School – a learning house for “elders-in-training.” He headed on the road one more time, alongside veteran Canadian musician Gregory Hoskins for the ‘Nights of Grief and Mystery’ tour. LOST NATION ROAD weaves a compelling case for what happened to elders in this culture, the consequence on youth today, and what can be done for the generations to come.


The idea I came up with is to use the play of 'Road'. I created a set of layered paths which symbolize the journeys we all take from birth to death. Roads cross cross each other in the same way as peoples paths. Like roads on untouched land, wrinkles naturally appear on peoples faces over time. Sparkle appear across the roads which symbolise the beautiful souls and experiences.

This short film was really influential and powerfully moving. I recommend everyone to take 30mins to watch it.

LOST NATION ROAD TITLES

LIVING WHILE DYING may serve as a tribal hearth in this way, as it both models ways of conducting “difficult” conversations around death, and shows how individuals, through their behavior and words, can bring presence and integrity to the sacred final phase of life.

Director Cathy Zheutlin approached me to create with a few pieces of motion graphics to support her narration in her film. I used this opportunity to partner up with a talented local Fine Artist Allison Parker and create emotive and thoughtful artworks that evoke what Cathy was feeling throughout the film. 

It is really rewarding to be able to use and harness feelings in art creation and it was a humbling and revealing experience working with this subject matter.

LIVING WHILE DYING

Not too long before 2020 and Covid-19 came along, I actually worked on the most presently relevant project - Pandemic. 

Seqirus, an arm of CLS and global force in influenza vaccines has also recently celebrated 100 years in being on the frontline of protection.Seqirus was kind enough to give us access to so much historical footage which was wonderful to work with. It was incredible to work on so many vintage photos and bring them to life. Always pushing myself, I tried new techniques which I used for CLS the year before. I also had to create an intro to a shorty documentary. It had to be fast-paced, violent, scary and tell a story in 30 seconds. Hope you enjoy.
